Ah, the steam. If a poker player claims never to have looked down the shadow of an approaching poker steam – they are either lying or they haven’t been betting long enough. This does not mean of course that every player has gone on steam before, a number of people have excellent willpower and take their squanderings as a loss and keep it at that. To be a strong poker player, it is absolutely important to treat your successes and your defeats in a similar manner – with little emotion. You compete in the match in the same manner you did following a tough beat as you would after winning a huge hand. You have to be certain that you can’t win each hand you are in, even if you are strongly favored. Hands which usually cause players to go on tilt are hands you were the favorite or at a minimum thought you were up until you were hit and you lost a huge portion of your bankroll. Seeing as we are assumingly (nearly all of us) playing poker for one reason – to earn $$$$, it will make sense that we would bet appropriately to maximize our profit potential. Now let’s say you are up one hundred dollars off of a $100 deposit, and you take a big blow in a No Limits game and your stack is down to one hundred and twenty dollars. You’ve burned $80 in a hand where you were certain to pick up $200two hundred dollars when you went all-in on the flop and held a ten to one edge. And that amateur!
