Phil Ivey has been labeled as the number one poker contender on the globe by quite a few of the top-ranked pros. He was born in Riverside, CA and moved to New Jersey before his first birthday. His grandpa taught him one cent-ante 5-Card Stud poker. From that point on, Phil was addicted to poker and wanted to pickup everything he could about poker. He routinely would tell his parents that he was planning on being a professional poker player. Phil did not let the detrimental comments from other people destroy his ambition of being one of the greatest poker players in the world.
He started competing intently after getting a false ID with the name of Jerome. He practiced his techniques at the poker rooms in Atlantic City. The initial few years for Phil were a teaching experience and coming away with a win wasn’t a normal outcome at the time. Phil became known at the 2000 WSOP when he achieved 2 final tables and won his first World Series of Poker bracelet, in a two dollar, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha event. At the final table he defeated quite a few of the better known pros which includes "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
Phil decided to take his skills to the next level and headed out west to Sin City. He continues to play in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players on the planet. Ivey credits his success to dedication and an undying love for poker. Phil says that he’s learning every single day and is very abashed about his accomplishments. He knows he makes errors in each game of poker and always strives to improve.
Despite the fact that Phil has won some large tournaments, he favors winning cash games on a regular basis.
